- Los Angeles artist Ken is a unique blend of artist and artisan. Ken began exhibiting in 1987 at the Los Angeles Art Expo and 1990 at the Laguna Beach " Art a Fair".
Los Angeles artist Ken Helenbolt is a unique blend of artist and artisan. Born in Minneapolis, he began studying art at age 10 at the University of North Dakota, obtained a Fine Arts degree from the University of Kansas in 1977, and moved to Los Angeles that same year. Also a master carpenter and gifted interior designer, Ken’s art both inspires and draws inspiration from his practicing trades. His old world Italian and retro inspired designs, exquisite carpentry and eclectic art pieces grace homes from Pasadena to Glendale to the Hollywood Hills, and clients are consistently thrilled to benefit from his unique “arts and craft” viewpoint and skill set.
Helenbolt’s diverse art finds expression in many mediums: from traditional paint and canvas to furniture to mosaic tile and iron sculpture to cartoon Illustration. His comfort with this range of mediums is a direct result of his broad professional experience. He has illustrated children’s books and designed sets for theater. He served as a technical illustrator for
3’x 8 iron and stone Yosemite wall hanging several manufacturing firms (includingTexaco and California Micro Wave) as well as a designer for Litton Data Command. Hanna Barbera recognized Helenbolt’s unique talent and hired him in 1986 as a model designer.
Helenbolt began exhibiting in 1987 at the Los Angeles Art Expo and 1990 at the Laguna Beach “Art a fair”. His work has since been exhibited at numerous galleries, purchased by art collectors around the world and featured in television programs, resulting in international exposure and appeal. Locally, Helenbolt has been displayed and sold by the Dorog
Gallery of Beverly Hills, Name That Toon Gallery of West Hollywood.
Helenbolt pieces have been shown at the elite Beverly Hills Art Show “Affaire in the Gardens” annually since his first participation in 1992, and Ken’s work was also on exhibit at the Malibu Art Show in 1994 and ’95. The Warner Bros. Music Division recently commissioned four of his pieces.
Ken prides himself on his eclectic influences, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary Bali artisans. To Helenbolt, “Art is one’s experiences and perception of life translated onto an artist’s medium, be it a play, poem, sculpture, movie, musical composition, portrait or photograph. My work is no exception.”
