- Lori paints expressive oil landscapes that blend real-world inspiration with imaginative stylization. Whether on location or in the studio, she transforms familiar scenes into something entirely her own.
Lori Cusick is a Dallas-based plein air and studio oil painter known for her bold, expressive interpretations of the landscape. Born in Port Jervis, New York, Lori earned her BFA in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She spent many years balancing a successful career as a graphic designer and editorial design director with her passion for painting—until 2019, when she left the corporate world to fully devote herself to her fine art practice.
Lori works begin en plein air, painting on location to immerse herself in the energy, atmosphere, and essence of a place. But she is not a literalist—her goal is never to replicate a scene. Instead, Lori reimagines the landscape, using vivid color, high contrast, and dynamic brushwork to transform trees, waterways, mountains, and clouds into stylized, emotionally charged compositions. In the studio, she expands on these ideas, refining forms and compositions while preserving the vitality of the original moment.
Whether in the field or at the easel, Lori insists on using only the highest-quality, eco-conscious art materials—making a conscious effort to reduce her environmental impact. Her creative process is guided not only by aesthetics but also by integrity, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
Lori’s work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Texas, and she is a signature member of the Texas Visual Arts Association. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections from Montana to New York, and she enjoys collaborating with collectors and designers to create pieces that resonate with a specific space.
She lives in Dallas with her husband, and any day of the week, you’re likely to find her under a big straw hat—painting on the side of a road, next to a creek, or in the middle of a field, capturing the spirit of the landscape in her own unmistakable way.
