Peonies and Yellow Iris – Naomi Brotherton
Peonies and Yellow Iris
Matted 24 x 28
20 x 25 Framed
The local markets in Mexico open before dawn. Most are outdoors with tarps stretched over the produce to keep it fresh. I was fascinated with the drape of those tarps and the lighting caused by their translucent quality.
La Casa with Dry Rock Walls
14 x 21
In Mexico I was fascinated by the strong rock walls with no mortar to hold them together, a hand-craft which is fast becoming a lost art. I also became interested in the way light of the warm earth colors bounced up into the shadows.
Caboose at a Switch
Framed 22 x 28
The caboose was a mysterious part of the train to me. Who had the privilege of riding in it? The Brakeman of course, and he conveyed his messages by hand-held flag or lantern signals. He literally rearranged the tracks at the switches as needed while the engineer awaited his signal to “go” or “back up.”
