This little church was visible from the highway and I longed to go there to paint, but we had to get permission to go to it through a locked gate. The blue sky complemented the fall foliage, and gave an interesting pattern of shadows on the white structure.

In Mexico I was fascinated by the strong rock walls with no mortar to hold them together, a hand-craft which is fast becoming a lost art. I also became interested in the way light of the warm earth colors bounced up into the shadows.

Having discovered this scene right at dusk one evening in New Braunfels, Texas, I was still painting on the spot when darkness claimed a stopping time. Once the basics are established, the finishing can be done by memory or knowledge of what might occur.
