One can imagine their own story for this scene. To me it is a quiet evening after services and the Sexton is shutting down for the night. Again the mystery of night is attempted in the dark shadow side of the church.

A grandfather tree dominates the space of these woods. The cooler trees in the distance seem to be in a setting of atmosphere pushing them further back. Dappled sun spots on the foreground give the sense of time of day.

    Tree Study with Poplars

    14 x 21 Unframed

    Watercolor

My interest in painting all kinds of trees includes the poplar trees which grow so old in New Mexico where I was painting both fall and summer. Their leaves turn yellow to yellow orange in the fall. In this study, I just suggested the reflections of the trees in what might be moving water of a stream.

    Sycamore Trees at Terlingua, NM

    14 x 19 Unframed

A short distance south of Sedona there is a typical Spanish style shopping/dining area with these white trees all through the site. The sunlight casts cool shadows, but the sun on the earth bounces the warm glow back into the shadow side… a condition that establishes the time of day, kind of weather.

The Montessori School across from our studio produced a big bed of Sun Flowers of the large type grown for the seed used in so many ways. This painting was done to show the volume of one bloom, life-size.

The Magnolia is like the “Leading Lady” of the southern Flowers. The custom in the south is to allow the trees to grow with little pruning, so that the blossoms are often near the ground. In my paintings of the large blossom, I attempt to capture the sculptural quality supported by the strength of the also sculptural leaves.

  • Pumpkin Patch – Naomi Brotherton

    $495.00

    Pumpkin Patch

    14 x 21 Unframed

    Watercolor

A warm dominance is used to give this painting a fall color as the pumpkins ripen for their special time. The white silo picks up reflected warmth on its shadow side, giving a feeling of the kind of weather.

  • New Mexico Horse Ranch – Naomi Brotherton

    $495.00

    New Mexico Horse Ranch

    14 x 20 Unframed

    Watercolor

While we were painting by the side of a county road, the owner of this ranch invited us to visit the barn where he told us all about his Appaloosa horses, fascinating because of their spots like big freckles mostly on their back hips. What a beautiful area for a horse’s life, as well as for man.

  • Mr. Henry’s White Barn – Naomi Brotherton

    $495.00

    Mr. Henry’s White Barn

    14 x 21 Unframed

    Watercolor

Using warm light bounce (reflected light) in the shadows of white objects has intrigued me for a long time. And trees are a favorite subject for me to paint, so this is a combination of the two, yet with the over-lap of the tree in front of the barn, we have a feeling of unity.

  • Mr. Henry’s Barn – Naomi Brotherton

Naomi’s night scene technique has been written up in several art magazines and books including her own Variations in Watercolor published by North Light Publishers in 1981 (now out of print). International Artist and American Artist magazines are among those who featured her concept of depicting the mystery of night. “Mr. Henry’s Barn” was finished in March of 2014.

  • Lilies That Float – Naomi Brotherton

    $520.00

    Lilies That Float

    17 x 23 Unframed

    Watercolor

To capture the essence of the flower petals, I try to convey the fresh, soft and bright qualities of most flowers. The newspaper had a story with photos stating that a family had donated their collection of water lilies to the park department, and it was only a few blocks from where we were painting. It was my first chance to see them in living form – a new challenge.
