Walking the Dog

The objective in my night scenes is to emphasize the mystery of night by having a large dark silhouette. While painting this dark area, a shape of a dog appeared in the shadows and I decided to “go with it”. I didn’t want the dog to be alone at night, so added the figure to complete the story.

The white Sycamore trees near Sedona, Arizona and the white stone wall called for something unusual… the red sky. Visitors to the area seemed to enjoy leisurely walking and resting among these sculptural trees.

The local markets in Mexico open before dawn. Most are outdoors with tarps stretched over the produce to keep it fresh. I was fascinated with the drape of those tarps and the lighting caused by their translucent quality.

Hope portrays the quintessential Mother and Child, filled with hope for the future, yet already subject to the winds of change, as depicted in her stirring hair. Time moves on – neither her love nor her protective hand can hold it back.
