“Moments in Time” by Christina Fitch
This series draws inspiration from fading memories, moments in time, and personal narratives. The artwork is taken from old photos of my family, which will include 4 generations. The theme of the painting deals with memories. Each painting is
distorted in some way to show the inaccuracy of our memories. Memories are reconstructions of reality, filtered through people’s minds. They are not perfect snapshots of events. When we look back at old photos we reinterpret them. Our minds have a different way of processing things from the past. Sometimes memories evoke more emotions than the moment it happened. The photo captures historical documentation of a moment in time. It does not tell the whole story and it doesn’t show what is truly going on in the character’s life. One can see what the person is doing and what they looked like, but not what they were thinking or feeling. Distortions are used to emphasize how the memory collected with the camera and can change over time. It also emphasizes how the photograph might not tell the whole story. Photographs can be misleading.
